Kyotei or hydroplane boat racing is one of a limited number of sports in Japan that allows gambling on site. Horse racing (keiba), Auto Race (speedway) and keirin bicycle racing are the three others.
In kyotei races six speed boats race three laps around a 600m artificial lake. Races take places both during the day and at night. There is usually one large grandstand for spectators adjacent to the starting positions.
The sport began in the 1950s and competitors may be men or women, with the latter making up around 10% of the racers.
There are over 20 courses in Japan and the one in the video is at Tokoname, south of Nagoya city.
