運動会
The weekend just gone is a popular one for the annual Sports Day (undokai) held at schools throughout Japan around this time.
The video shows the practice for the big day at a Junior High School in Tokyo complete with the school's brass band, synchronized marching and bowing practice.
Each school has a different approach. Public Junior High Schools' undokai may seem like a throw back to the dark days of militarism in the 1930s with the flag carrying and reverential bowing while Elementary Schools may include tunes by AKB48 as the kids gyrate to 21st century idol fluff.
